The long version, due to an increased workload this week, is pretty much like the short version. I could tell you shitloads more about the game and the cast of thousands that contributed to a very pleasant weekend, but it’s already got round to Wednesday and I haven’t even started; so all I can do is disappoint you – which I will now gladly do.
Anyway, we lost, but we weren’t bad at all. We hit the post and got close on a number of occasions, but as usual we got in a traffic jam in front of their goal. Instead of keeping possession and building up from the back again we insisted on trying to force our way through 20 other players in the final third of the pitch. It’s no surprise that we had lots of shots, but not so many clear-cut chances.
Dornbirn took their time building up from the back without ever really getting excited, the difference being that the fewer chances they made were clearer cut and resulted from rapid attacking play. To say that one spill by Alex Trappl decided the whole game would be a bit unfair. Other teams shoot first and follow up, knowing that no keeper is going to hold everything. We try to get inside the penalty area and dribble the ball into the goal, which is like trying to ram your clenched fist into a full tin of baked beans to get to the bottom.
We still created lots of half chances, but if we were really bad we wouldn’t be creating chances in the first place, so it’s disappointing – a bit like this report - but it’s not the end of the world.
